It all began in the summer of 2020, a year marked by the COVID-19 pandemic. With lockdowns and social distancing measures in place, people were yearning for a sense of normalcy and a way to escape the monotony of isolation. Among these people was Kārlis. He decided to organize a small, one-day event, combining gravel riding with a BBQ feast.
The inaugural event was simple but profoundly enjoyable. A dozen friends gathered to explore the gravel trails, then came together to enjoy a well-deserved barbecue. The fresh air, physical activity, and social interaction were a balm for their pandemic-weary souls. This success led to two more such events, solidifying a tradition that was to grow beyond their initial imaginings.
The Evolution: A Weekend Extravaganza
The following year, in 2021, buoyed by the enthusiasm of the previous gatherings, the organizers decided to expand the event into a weekend-long adventure. The new format included social rides, Strava challenges, games, a DJ to keep the atmosphere lively, and of course, the beloved BBQ. The extended format allowed for a richer experience, with participants bonding over multiple days of shared activities and friendly competition.
Adding a Competitive Edge
In 2022, building on the momentum and the growing interest in gravel riding, the organizers decided to introduce a competitive element: a gravel race but still then as a separate event. This addition was a hit, drawing even more participants and adding an exciting dimension to the event.
A Championship Event and Gravel Weekend
By 2023, Gravel Weekend had grown significantly. Fifty participants attended, a testament to the event’s increasing popularity. The previous year’s success with the race opened a chance to organize the very first Latvian Gravel Championship, attracting even more competitive cyclists also from abroad.
Merging Traditions: The Ultimate Gravel Weekend
This year, the organizers have taken the next step, merging the Gravel Weekend with the race into one grand event. The combined format promises to be the best yet, blending the social and competitive aspects seamlessly. Participants can look forward to social rides, Strava challenges, games, DJ entertainment, tasty food and coffee, Aerify recovery zone, FizioCentrs physiotherapy, Veloprofs bike shop, and souvenir shop. And for sure, the highly anticipated gravel race. This merger not only streamlines the events but also amplifies the sense of community and competition that has become the hallmark of Gravel Weekend. Inclusion in the Gravel Earth Series attracts more and more participants from different countries. We can surely tell that there will be participants from at least 15 countries and four continents.
Looking Ahead
As Gravel Weekend continues to grow, the organizers remain committed to its roots: a celebration of cycling, community, and the simple joy of coming together. What started as a small, pandemic-era escape has blossomed into a cherished tradition, attracting cyclists from near and far. The future looks bright, with plans to expand and enhance the event while maintaining the spirit of camaraderie and adventure that has defined it from the start.
Gravel Weekend is more than just an event; it’s a testament to the power of community and the enduring appeal of the great outdoors. From its humble beginnings to its current status as a championship event, it continues to inspire and bring people together, year after year.
